Nice Bebe Visor

Here I am, back on campus, with nothing to do but people watch.

(I'm an idiot, and should know after all these years of college that there are almost NEVER lab sessions during the first week of the semester.)

It's raining, and sadly I don't get to see many new sad prospects for high fashion.

Now, truth be told, UW Milwaukee is not quite the fashion show that the U of M, Twin cities was. In the arena of Midwest universities, UWM is far more blue collar than the U of M.

Still, that black Bebe visor with white rhinestones was pretty interesting. Is that really fashionable? I mean, it just looked silly.

Here is another question, for the girls that wear bright pink... don't your eyes burn by the end of the day? I mean, I'm not one to question your color choices. I just wonder if you have to sacrifice a bit of your daily vision in order to rock such an ostentatious shirt.

Look! A Panthers shirt! There's some school spirit. Much better than the Badger and Cubs logos I saw earlier.

HEY YOU! EAT A SANDWICH!!

Okay, I sort of understand the iPod on the arm thing... but your forearm? Really? How is that less in your way? Hell, the extra mass is probably totally throwing off your momentum, I bet you'll have a weird inexplicable pain in your shoulder blades tonight.

I wonder if anyone suspects that I'm listening to "When Doves Cry" by Prince right now. I wonder what this girl with a polka dot purse almost half her size would say about that. (Probably nothing that couldn't be countered by mocking her purse)

And this guy? This is what Jesus would look like with Aviators.

Anyone going to Pantherfest that wants to come along with me? I don't even know if I want to go myself, but knowing who else will be there will aid my decision.

Happy Fall everyone!

M is for Meta

Fear not loyal A is for Awesome readers, but I think it's time we get our Meta-Awesome on.

Things that are real are still awesome, but I have come to the meta-realization that meta-reality is what is REALLY awesome.

Stories within stories, breaking the fourth wall, insulting your audience, these are all facets of meta-awesome. Blogging, when done properly should be constantly meta-awesome. Even when something isn't actually awesome, it can still be meta-awesome if it's decidedly not awesome on purpose. That said, let us not be mistaken. Meta-awesome is not, I repeat, it is NOT irony. Irony would imply that the act was committed because it wasn't the proper thing to do. It's only meta-awesome if the intention was to draw attention to the fact that it wasn't the right thing to do.

Some of you will say that I don't understand how irony works. I will say in reply that I don't care, this discussion is meta-awesome, and that is the purpose of this blog retrospectively.

Anyway, I just wanted to have a rambling entry about the first wave of post-awesome: the meta-awesome wave.

By the way, the first wave is already over; you missed it. (HOW META-AWESOME IS THAT??)

Okay, I'm just confused about this one...

Please discuss, or at least give me an explanation!

One Last Post about Death Cab for a while

As nearly anybody who would care probably already knows, the new Death Cab For Cutie record, Narrow Stairs, comes out on Tuesday. I certainly haven't anticipated this record like I had with Plans a few years ago. Well, you can stream it over on VH1.com now. Obviously I gave it a spin.

I have a few things to say about it. First of all, it's pretty good, but I don't think it's great. Even though Walla's production is better than ever, it is definitely missing the angst that Qualler was talking about a few feeks ago. There are flourishes of brilliance, but songs like "Long Division" just come off as forced. "Cath" on the other hand has all the layers you want in a DCFC song. The other day I mentioned some live studio tracks from the new record available. This gave me a preview of the record; oddly enough, "Cath" was the one that I thought was going to have less potential. To the contrary, "Talking Bird" (the song with the stupid lyrics) was completely ruined by the album version. The only redeeming part of the song is totally masked. I have to say that this really disappointed me. Now it just sounds like one of the weaker tracks from Plans. All in all though, I can't complain. This record is most definitely a step in the right direction, I think we just need to find some way to get Jonny Greenwood to join Gibbard and Walla in the studio for the next one and see if something truly exciting can happen.
